Leaf's Me Happy, October 9th

Fall has arrived in my dahlia bed!!

Leaf's Me Happy-My DAY to share!  (don't forget the others along this hop)

"Whirl Star in Fall"

How exciting to share a block with others, October 9th carries special meaning because it would have been the 100th birthday of my mother-in-law!!!  I have chosen a free paper pieced pattern available online from (http://www.favequilts.com ) to create a "Whirling Star". The use of a handy "tool" created by my husband, The Wizz Ripper Gripper, came in handy to smooth seams and cut threads.  I will be giving away a Wizz Ripper Gripper to one lucky follower!!

Wizz Ripper Gripper

The Wizz Ripper Gripper is like having a "third" hand to quickly cut chain-pieced items apart.  The base is constructed from aluminum in the shape of a heart which has a custom slot designed for a high quality folding seam ripper.  You can fold the sharp point down when not in use, or remove and fold up and place securely in the base.  A bonus feature is that you can use the weighted base as a "press" or if you are experiencing a "power surge" use it to "cool off".

Being in the teaching profession always brings a whirl of activity in the fall in preparation of students return to the classroom.  This season is one of my personal favorites with all the change events unfolding and mother nature presenting beautiful colors before our eyes.  While my garden is producing many stunning colors, including this "Rock Star", the classroom contains many more future leaders.

With my paper piece pattern/instructions downloaded, printing of the templates, it was time to prepare my materials for construction.  Selecting the fabric presented difficult choices and once I decided upon a yellow for background, the floral jumped out of the container and finished with an accent fabric to depict the blazing red sunsets we have witnessed this fall (unfortunately the vivid colors are the result of a lot of "smoke" from various wildfires). A BIG thank you to a good friend for opening her "fabric stash" to make my selections, she also provided an area to "construct".  If you would like a copy of the pattern, send me an email:  o2lizf@gmail.com

Selected pattern example from http://www.favequilts.com
Below you will find the fabrics I selected and the unfinished block.

Organizing the pieces for sewing.

It is very important to read directions carefully and the pattern used contained both text and pictures to guide you through the construction process.  A few helpful "veteran hints" such as using a 1/4" ruler, a firm piece of cardstock to assist with folding, and using a quality "paper" for the templates was important advice.

"whirl star in fall" centerpiece block

This is designed as a 12 1/2" block, my dining room table is round and I wanted to have a "centerpiece" to place my handblown glass vase to display my flowers.
Seasonal flowers on display

Just the block

Fabric details
IF you are interested in having the detailed construction directions, please send me an email and I will provide a pdf document.

A special thanks to Cherry for hosting this great event-Remember to visit the other sites featuring blocks today and during this Blog-Hop-don't forget to "comment" or "follow" my blog to have an opportunity to be entered in a random drawing to be held on Halloween Eve (10/30/12) for your special "treat" opportunity to  own  a Wizz Ripper Gripper!  With the winner's permission, the selection will be posted on this blog.

Oh,a gal after my heart in many ways. Education run deeps in my family as does quilting. I will be emailing you for the pattern. I recently participated in a Pat Speth retreat and the whizz ripper gripper tool thingy was a great source of conversation at the retreat. I sure have been wanting one. I just use a pair of scissors. Your block is amazing and sings of spring. Oh, yeah, my current husband is from Gresham. Small world isn't it. He and I each spent 30 years in the world of IT before retiring. Now, I can quilt, quilt, quilt! His sister and SIL each live in the Portland area and have quite a quilting envy going. One is very artisitic and the other is quite a perfectionist (having been an engineer). Thank you for taking time in this busy, busy world to particpate and share your creativity. You inspired many, many people. Thank you!
